Li-Fi : Light Bulb to produce Wi-Fi signals

Posted by on 1:21 pm in General, Technology | 0 comments

Light Bulb named Li-Fi to produce Wi-Fi signals – Sounds strange? Yes, but its true. Scientists at Shanghai’s Institute of Technical Physics have created a light bulb named ‘Li-Fi’ that produces its own Wi-Fi signal. Not just that, it produces a connection that works better than the average wireless connection in China. A single one-watt LED bulb connects upto four nearby computers to the Internet using light frequencies instead of radio waves. The bulb is embedded with a chip that emits a signal with a wireless speed of about 150 Mbps. This technology is affordable and the only thing that you need is a light bulb and Li-Fi kit. The technology is in the initial testing phase and a good amount of designing , communication controls and manufacturing needs to be worked upon in detail. This technology can be useful in transmitting data by using light frequencies and may redefine the use radio signals. Li-Fi will be showcased at the Shanghai International Industry Fair on November 5. Via :...

Apple can decrypt private iMessages

Posted by on 12:26 pm in General, iOS | 0 comments

Quarklabs, a security research firm has released data that iMessages are not fully secured as Apple has full control over the encryption keys making it possible for the company to review the messages. Apple had recently stated that they cannot decrypt the data and conversations that take place on iMessage. The data is protected so that no one apart from the sender and receiver can see them. The recent findings however prove it wrong as Apple is very much capable of decrypting all private messages if they are forced by government agencies to do so. QuarkLabs prefaced its findings by stating that it has no evidence that Apple is or has already exploited this vulnerability. Apple has refrained by out-rightly refuting the claim made by Quarklabs and is maintaining it initial statement by saying that “research discussed theoretical vulnerabilities that would require Apple to re-engineer the iMessage system to exploit it, and Apple has no plans or intentions to do so.” Independent cryptography experts and security research sector has accepted the data findings and concepts as valid. Does that leave us with another security issue with Apple ? What are your views? Do write to us in the comments section below. Via :...

#Music App by Twitter to be discontinued after just six months

Posted by on 11:21 pm in General | 0 comments

Twitter had launched the #Music mobile app six months ago and is already contemplating discontinuing the app after the sales dropped off drastically after a strong start. When the app was launched it was at No. 6 position in Apple’s App Store but later its position fell sharply over the coming months. According to Onavo, an app analytic company, Twitter #Music was at 1672th position by August end while another company AppAnnie placed the app at 264 in the iTunes app Music vertical last week. Many believe that the main problem with the Music app is – it was developed in isolation by the former business development leader at Twitter, Kevin Thau and created by “We Are Hunted” team that Twitter acquired last year. Thau left soon after the Music app was launched and the app never fully integrated with the production team during its development. We also hear that Twitter is looking at restructuring its entire music department so it is not clear when the actual closure might happen. Via :...

Tech giants form A4AI – Alliance for Affordable Internet

Posted by on 11:07 am in General | 0 comments

Tech giants Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Facebook, Intel and a few other companies have formed an alliance ( A4AI – Alliance for Affordable Internet )  to make broadband Internet more affordable in developing countries. The main purpose of A4AI is to work on fulfilling the UN Broadband Commission’s goal of making entry-level broadband available for less than 5% of every region’s monthly income. According to reasearch only one third of the world is online with many simply not being able to afford a broadband connectivity. A low end broadbrand in most developing countries costs around 30% of the individuals monthly income whereas in developed countries it is 2%. Sadly, in countries like Mozambique, one gigabyte can cost as much as 2 months earnings. WWW inventor and A4AI Secretariat Tim Berners-Lee says,”With the advent of affordable smartphones, new undersea cables and innovations in wireless spectrum usage, there is simply no good reason for the digital divide to continue. The real bottleneck now is anti-competitive policies that keep prices unaffordable. The alliance is about removing that barrier and helping as many as possible get online at reasonable cost.” A4AI will lobby for updated policies and encourage “open, competitive and innovative broadband markets.” The alliance intends to approach three to four African states by the end of this year and at least 12 countries by 2015. The non-profit group will release a set of best practices and annual “Affordability Report” starting this December. Via :...
